Evaluating Eco-Friendly Refrigerant Alternatives for Cascade Refrigeration Systems: A Thermoeconomic Analysis

A simple vapor-compression refrigeration system becomes ineffective and inefficient as it consumes a huge energy supply when operating between large temperature differences. Moreover, the recent Kigali amendment has raised concern about phasing out some hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants due to their impact on environment. In this paper, numerical investigation is carried compare performance of cascade with two environmentally friendly refrigerant combinations, namely, R170–R404A R41–R404A. Refrigerant R170, from hydrocarbon category, R41, are separately chosen for low-temperature circuit similar thermophysical properties. On other hand, R404A selected high-temperature circuit. An attempt made replace R41 R170 possible alternative. The condenser kept constant at 40 °C, evaporator varied −60 °C −30 °C. mathematical model developed solved using Engineering Equation Solver (EES). effect different parameters such COP, exergetic efficiency, total plant cost rate evaluated. predicted results show that thermoeconomic R170–R404A-based marginally lower compared R41–R404A-based system. pair achieved only 2.4% efficiency R41–R404A, an increase in annual USD 200. As global warming potential (GWP) less than belongs use combination can be recommended alternative
